How to Greet People in Japanese

There are a couple common ways to greet people in Japanese, depending on the situation.

The first way to greet someone in Japanese is to say, “hajimemashite.” Translated directly, this means “nice to meet you.” You should use it, obviously, when you meet someone who is unfamiliar to you.

If you know the person, but you haven’t seen them for a while, you can say, “Hisashiburi.” In English this is like saying, “nice to see you again,” or “long time no see.” It is a very friendly greeting.
